There is a distinct difference in tire sizes and performance, but not for quality assurance. The Department of Transportation mandates that all tire manufacturers adhere to a system called the Uniform Tire Quality Grade (UTQG). The UTQG marking is embedded on the tire sidewall. Whether you have a new or used vehicle, there is confidence in knowing the quality standard has been adhered to.

It’s also important to know the other essential embedded information. All tires include markings on the sidewall which are specific to that tire. For example, "P" means that the tire is for a passenger vehicle, while "LT" means it’s for a light truck. The wheel diameter is probably the most important to know. It is a two-digit number in inches that reflects the only size that will fit your wheel. A tread width is a three-digit number in millimeters.
