Always on the cutting edge of technology, Ford is continuously developing new driver-assist systems designed to enhance safety for everyone who shares the road, including pedestrians. With a new technology called Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection, future Ford models will help drivers avoid frontal collisions with other vehicles and people on foot. The new system has been introduced in Europe on a Ford model called the Mondeo and will later be incorporated in Ford models around the world.
Ford has not stated when the technology will roll out to U.S. models like the Ford Fusion, Explorer, Mustang, F-150 and Fiesta, but Grapevine Ford can't wait for its debut in the states. Prior to now, many frontal accident-avoidance technologies were not well equipped to detect pedestrians who stepped out in front of vehicles, but Ford's Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection tackles this problem by merging the signals of an advanced forward-looking camera system and radar, which work together to provide optimized object and pedestrian monitoring.
If the system identifies an impending accident, it sends a warning to the driver. Then if the driver does not respond in time, the system applies the brakes to attempt to avoid or minimize the severity of a collision. Watch the video below to see how the system works for yourself.
