To celebrate the Mustang's 50th anniversary, Ford has arranged a number of events, but there's one that will strike a chord with many of the car's oldest fans. Five decades ago, the Mustang was first revealed to the public when it was displayed on top of the Empire State Building at the New York World's Fair. Now, Ford plans to exhibit the new 2015 Mustang on the building's observatory, 86 stories above the ground, to recreate the same feat it pulled off when first introducing the iconic sports car to America.
As you can imagine, getting a car on top of the Empire State Building isn't easy, and the Ford Mustang is larger in size than it was five decades ago. So, to tackle the challenge, a technical team has determined the best places to "cut" the car into sections. Once it's disassembled, it will be taken up the building's elevators on specially made racks. Then Ford's crew will only have about six hours to put it back together and on display for all of Manhattan to see on Apr. 16 and 17.
It'll be a fantastic sight, not to mention the perfect way to celebrate Mustang's milestone anniversary. "New York is one of the greatest cities in the world, and it's the place where the Ford Mustang story began 50 years ago. We're thrilled to be visiting the architectural landmark that has been the heart of the Manhattan skyline for 83 years with the newest generation of the car," said Ford chief Operating Officer, Mark Fields.
