Specs at a Glance

The Ford F-150 continues to be the full-size pickup truck of choice for drivers who want power and luxury. To ensure that the F-150 can serve a wide variety of drivers, it is available in several trim levels. The base model, called the XL, is by no means bare bones. As drivers look higher on the list, they find the midlevel Lariat. How do these two options compare when looked at closely?

For the XL model, the F-150 utilizes a 3.3L V6 engine that makes 290-horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Coming standard for the F-150 Lariat is a twin-turbocharged 2.7L EcoBoost engine that generates 325-horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque. Both models are available with several different engines, including a turbocharged diesel V6 that makes 250-horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. No matter the engine, the 2021 F-150 uses a ten-speed automatic transmission. Both the XL and Lariat come standard with rear-wheel drive and have the option for four-wheel drive.

The F-150 has a commanding presence. Several exciting and bold paint options are available for all models, including Race Red, Space White, Oxford White, and Velocity Blue. For the Lariat model, the F-150 gains brilliant LED exterior lighting, as well as a Class IV trailer hitch.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features on both the XL and Lariat trim levels of the F-150. While the XL uses an 8-inch touchscreen, the Lariat model goes up to a 12-inch one instead. The XL model can help increase driver safety, thanks to standard forward-collision mitigation and lane departure warning. The Lariat further adds rear automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The Lariat's other additions include dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats, and even power-adjustable pedals.
