What's New for the 2018 Ford Edge?

The Ford Edge is a unique vehicle that has carved out a niche for itself between the traditional compact crossovers and mid-size SUVs. It offers drivers the space and flexibility of a mid-size SUV combined with excellent agility and performance. For the 2018 model, Ford has given drivers a new customization option as well as making it easier to add some very desirable safety features.

The Sports Appearance package on the SEL model blacks out the headlights and the grille, as well as adding several other dark accents to the model. Meanwhile, the new Safe and Smart package is available on all but the base SE and adds modern active safety options like automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, lane departure monitoring and more. These new options combined with the SUVs existing features to make the 2018 Ford Edge one of the most versatile mid-size crossovers available today.

A Variety of Trims and Features

The Ford Edge lineup remains the same for 2018, consisting of four trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium, and Sport. All of them also come with some options that are available both individually and as discounted packages to help you tailor your Edge to your requirements.

The base Edge SE offers most of the standard features you can expect on an SUV, such as a rearview camera, Bluetooth, push-button start and SYNC infotainment. It is equipped with the four-cylinder turbo engine and comes in both front-wheel and all-wheel drive, though it has few upgrade options beyond that.

The SEL adds some excellent standard amenities like front power seats and dual-zone automatic climate control to the SE feature list, but its primary value comes from the various packages of optional safety, performance and convenience features it has available, including the stronger V6 engine.

The Titanium is the top model of the 2018 Edge when it comes to features. It comes standard with leather seating and a hands-free liftgate, as well as Ford's acclaimed SYNC 3 infotainment with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support. It also offers many of the same upgrades and packages as the SEL.

The Edge Sport is similar to the Titanium regarding amenities but also lives up to its name with its powerful twin-turbo V-6 engine paired with all-wheel drive.

High Performance Options

2018 Ford Edge FrontThe 2018 Edge can be fitted with one of three engine options. Most models come standard with a twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 220 horsepower using conventional gasoline or 245 when fueled with premium. That is the only engine available on the Edge SE, while the SEL and Titanium also offer a V6 engine. The 3.5-liter naturally aspirated block gives you 280 horsepower of performance and, like the turbo four comes in front-wheel and all-wheel drive varieties. The final engine choice for the 2018 Ford Edge is all-wheel drive only and is the sole engine choice for the Edge Sport. This 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 transforms the Edge into a real street racer with its 315 horsepower. Regardless of engine choice, the Ford Edge handles confidently with active steering and a responsive suspension.

Top Marks for Safety

2018 Ford Edge RearFor a crossover SUV like the Ford Edge, safety is always a priority. This year's package changes make it easy to add the Safe and Smart package to almost any Edge, providing easy access to safety features like forward collision warning with automatic braking, blind spot detection, and a unique 180-degree front view camera. Crash tests are also a strong point for the Edge, with a full five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
